Third Party Design for Jamaica Capacity Improvements – Phase II
Jamaica Station serves as the hub of the LIRR, where train service from 10 Long Island customer branches passes through Jamaica and are routed on path to three main west terminals (Penn Station New York, Atlantic Terminal Brooklyn, and Hunterspoint Avenue) and a fourth planned terminal (Grand Central Terminal). The Jamaica Capacity Improvements (JCI) Project as a whole, represents LIRR’s Master Plan for the future of Railroad operations through Jamaica.

JCI Phase II completes the Jamaica reconfiguration increasing overall capacity, reducing travel time, and improving system reliability by upgrading key elements of the infrastructure.

Garg’s responsibilities on this project included engineering support for various disciplines including railroad systems (signal, communications, electric traction), civil, MEP, and structural.

Completed Tasks

- Worked under JCI PM and performed miscellaneous tasks including document control, drafting meeting minutes, RFI, design briefs, reviewed schedules and estimates, and overall coordination with all disciplines to complete the design.
- Created, edited, and managed AutoCad base files and sheets.
- Prepared, finalized, and submitted to client all drawings design packages for all stages (Stages 3 through 12) and 4 submittals per stage 30%, 60%, 90%, 100%.
- Addressed client comments on the design packages.
- Performed Utility investigation and updated the Topography and Utility base files using As-Builts/ Schematics/ Survey Information/Pictures/ Lidar.
- Coordinated the proposed utility infrastructure for all disciplines (High Tension Signal Power, Drainage, Signal cables, Communications Fiber Optic, DC Positive and DC Negative) and proposed utility relocations of existing utilities.
- Investigated ROW and easement requirements for the project for new signal infrastructure.
- Worked with Track and Signal Departments to coordinate PTC design.
- Helped with the Construction Staging drawings and track outages needed to perform the work.
- Performed Lidar Extractions using TopoDOT and MicroStation Connect.
- VWC2/ A6 document control for design reviews, submittals, CRF’s and RFI’s.
