Project Profile

Jamaica Station serves as the hub of the LIRR, where train service from 10 Long Island customer branches passes through Jamaica and are routed on path to three main west terminals (Penn Station New York, Atlantic Terminal Brooklyn, and Hunterspoint Avenue) and a fourth planned terminal (Grand Central Terminal). The Jamaica Capacity Improvements (JCI) Project as a whole represents LIRR’s Master Plan for the future of railroad operations through Jamaica.

JCI Phase II completes the Jamaica reconfiguration, increasing overall capacity, reducing travel time, and improving system reliability by upgrading key elements of the infrastructure.

Garg’s responsibilities on this project included engineering support for various disciplines, including railroad systems (signal, communications, electric traction), civil, MEP, and structural. Specific duties include:

  • Working under the JCI Project Manager and performing miscellaneous tasks such as document control, drafting meeting minutes, RFIs, design briefs, scheduling, estimating, and coordinating with all disciplines to complete the design.
  • Creating, editing, and managing AutoCAD base files and sheets.
  • Preparing, finalizing, and submitting all drawing design packages to the client for all stages (Stages 3 through 12) and for each submittal level (30%, 60%, 90%, 100%).
  • Addressing client comments on the design packages.
  • Performing utility investigations and updating the topography and utility base files using as-builts, schematics, survey information, photos, and LIDAR data.
  • Coordinating proposed utility infrastructure across all disciplines (High Tension Signal Power, Drainage, Signal Cables, Communications Fiber Optic, DC Positive and DC Negative) and planning utility relocations for existing infrastructure.
  • Investigating ROW and easement requirements for the project for new signal infrastructure.
  • Collaborating with Track and Signal Departments to coordinate PTC design.
  • Assisting with the construction staging drawings and track outages necessary to perform the work.
  • Performing Lidar Extractions using TopoDOT and MicroStation Connect.
  • Managing VWC2/A6 document control for design reviews, submittals, CRFs, and RFIs.
